Miles to Go This Christmas

Many of us are fortunate enough to live in close proximity of our parent(s) but for for the ever if us caregivers, there are mile and miles between us, physically. Christmas is a precious time to spend with family, as are all holidays but how do you find joy in them when you’re separated by highways?

If there’s any way to make the trek at any time over the holiday season, I’d greatly encourage a visit. You see, our aging parents view life so differently at this stage than we do and so visits, even short ones, have huge and lasting impact. In addition to the gift of visiting, which is a gift in and if itself, you create a memory that will last you both a lifetime. After a loved one is gone, all you’ll have are the memories made along the way, the pictures taken, the special meals shared.

I realize that sometimes that trek may just be impossible. So what can you do? FaceTime is a terrific app whereby you and your parent can talk and visit via a live video. Investing in an inexpensive iPad might be worth it. Another great sides is to shoot several little videos of the family, grandchildren, etc. that can then be sent via email or text. This way your loved ones can share in the family gatherings with you. It may be in the video that everyone shares a special video message.

Small little gestures on our part prove huge on the receiving end. Our job is to keep our loved ones who are separated by miles feeling connected and loved and NOT FORGOTTEN! So this Christmas, send a video, make the phone call, but that plane or train ticket. They’re worth it!
